Shubman Gill Biography

Gill was born on September 8, 1999, in the small town of Fazilka in the Indian state of Punjab. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in cricket, and his father, Lakhwinder Singh Gill, recognized his talent and passion for the sport. Lakhwinder Singh, who was a landlord, ensured that his son had access to the best cricketing facilities in the region and encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming a professional cricketer.

Shubman’s hard work and dedication paid off when he made his first-class debut for Punjab in 2017, at the age of 18. He made an immediate impact and scored a century in his third first-class game. Gill was then selected to play for the India Under-19 team in the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he was the leading run-scorer for India and played a crucial role in India’s victory in the tournament.

After his impressive performance in the Under-19 World Cup, Gill was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2018. He had a successful debut season, scoring 203 runs in 13 matches, with the highest score of 57.

Gill made his international debut for India in January 2019 in an ODI against New Zealand, where he scored 9 runs. He made his Test debut in December 2018 against Australia and scored 45 runs in his first innings, displaying his class and technique against the world-class Australian bowling attack. Since then, he has become a regular member of the Indian cricket team and has established himself as a top-order batsman. In 2023, Shubman became the 5th Indian batsman to hit a double century in ODI, and the youngest batsman to score a double century in ODI in men’s international cricket.

Shubman Gill has received several awards and accolades for his performances on the cricket field. He was named the Player of the Tournament in the 2018 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup for his exceptional performances with the bat. He was also awarded the Emerging Player of the Year award by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for his performances in the 2018-19 domestic season.
