Director John Schlesinger seriously considered him for the title role in Midnight Cowboy (1969) after the playwright William Inge introduced him. Producer Jerome Hellman met Ewing based on Schlesinger's recommendation, and while he also found the actor attractive, he felt that he didn't have all the qualities that the role required. Ultimately, Jon Voight got the role.
In 1968, he turned up as Bachelor #2 on an episode of The Dating Game (1965), when a then-unknown Lindsay Wagner picked a different bachelor to be her date.
His acting career entailed several guest shots on TV shows, sitcoms and movies but he is best known for his role of a part-time deputy marshal and handy man, Clayton Thaddeus "Thad" Greenwood in thirty-six episodes (October 2, 1965 - September 25, 1967) of the popular TV western series, Gunsmoke, starring James Arness as Dodge City's Marshall Matt Dillon.
